1. My story
My name is mukondli, and I am a software developer focused on advancing the presence of African languages in digital spaces. Over the past decade, my work has been guided by the belief that language carries identity, and that technology should reflect the people who use it.
In the course of my work with African languages, I developed an interest in building social media experiences that reflect cultural context and intentional expression. Many platforms encourage sharing, but I wanted to create something that feels more connected to identity and authentic self-expression.
I also have a personal connection to the name Vukosi, as it is the name of my nephew. Vukosi is a young man who loves the finer things in life.
2. Problem
Africa is one of the most active regions globally on social media, yet the platforms used by millions were not originally designed with African users in mind.
Many African languages remain underrepresented, and culturally grounded expression is often not fully captured or understood. Content created in local contexts can struggle to gain wider visibility, while much of the value generated by African users flows beyond the continent with limited local retention.
The result is a digital experience where people participate, but rarely feel fully represented.
3. Why Vukosi
Vukosi is built in response to this reality, rethinking how social sharing can be structured from the ground up rather than adapting existing models.
The name reflects dignity, presence, and the idea that every individual carries something meaningful worth sharing. It establishes a space where identity is central rather than secondary.
Vukosi is shaped by cultural context, language, and lived experience—where how something is shared matters as much as what is shared.
4. Introducing Vukosi
Vukosi means kingship or queenship in Xitsonga.
Vukosi is grounded in the belief that shared moments should be intentional and carry meaning. It is shaped around African context—how stories are formed, how identity is expressed, and how lived experience gives depth to everyday moments.
Rather than treating posts as static updates, Vukosi treats them as experiences that are presented with care. It gives users space to shape how their content appears and is encountered, allowing expression to move beyond default templates into something more deliberate and context-aware.
Vukosi sees posts as something with presence. Something that reflects not only a moment, but how that moment is chosen to be seen and remembered.

7. Upcoming features
Vukosi is designed to evolve with its community. The roadmap is focused on addressing real gaps in how people create, express, and connect within African digital spaces.
7.1 Verification
Account verification will be introduced for public figures, creators, brands, and organisations. This strengthens trust, reduces impersonation, and reinforces authenticity across the platform.
7.2 Video editing
Native video editing tools will be built directly into the app, allowing creators to produce and refine content without relying on external software. This lowers barriers and makes high-quality storytelling more accessible.
7.3 Music integration
Music will be integrated into the content creation experience, enabling users to express moments through sound. This also creates opportunities to amplify African artists within a platform designed for their audience.
7.4 Location features
Location-based functionality will allow users to discover content and connect with others in their own towns, cities, and regions—making the platform more relevant to local communities and everyday experiences.
7.5 African knowledge integration
Cultural knowledge systems—such as proverbs, oral traditions, and historical context—will be embedded into the platform, enriching how content is understood and connecting modern expression with heritage.
7.6 African language integration
Language is central to Vukosi. Future updates will introduce interface localisation, language-based discovery, and tools that make it natural to create and engage in your mother tongue.
Together, these features move Vukosi beyond a social app into a platform shaped by culture, language, and community.
8. Conclusion
Vukosi exists within a moment of opportunity. Millions of Africans shape global culture through creativity and expression, yet remain disconnected from ownership of the platforms they use.
It reimagines social sharing as something rooted in identity, language, and community—where people are not just participants, but fully represented.
Share your moments.
